The Culture of Dionaea Varieties

1. How to care when you get the young plants in trays

After long-distance transportation, most plants are tied like people.

1.1 Water requirement: When the plant just arrive to you. Please check the substrate and plant, and water the dry plants if necessary. Water quality: EC< 0.3, low in minerals and distilled water will be much better.

1.2 If there is no time for you to transplant the young seedlings into pot timely, please put tray plants under light of 5000-9000lux and keep moisture of RH 85%-90%. To make it, you can do as follows.

1.2.1 Plastic Film Moisturiing: To establish a low plastic tunnel covered with plastic film on the top, and make sure tunnel bottom is flat and non-draining .

1.2.2  Air humidification machine can be used to increase humidity, but the cost is too much.

1.3 Temperature  21-32℃,not for long time under temperature of 35℃

1.4 Fertilizer The plants don’t need fertilizer during seedlings.

2.Transplantation and Culture of pot plants

2.1.1 Growing Substrate

Peat moss or sphagnum moss

a.  Peat moss: Pure peat moss is OK with pH=3.5 around, EC<0.3ms/cm, grain diameter 5-20mm from other grower.

b.  Sphagnum moss: Soak the sphagnum into the boiling water for a period of time to remove germs and weed seeds and leave them to cool naturally. We prefer to using sphagnum.

2.1.2 Transplanting

a. Size of 6-10cm of plastic pot

b. Dionaea is sensitive to salts, don’t touch the trap when transplanting with hands.

c. Watering the pot plants to keep substrate moist.

2.1.3 Nursery bed preparation

The picture is our nursery bed, you can establish your own type according to the Dionaea’s enviormental requirement.

2.1.4 Pot plants Culture

a..At early Stage of 10-15 days after transplanting Please keep the plants under the environment similar to tray plants’.

At later stage, please increase the light and lower the misture gradually to avoid sudden leaf buring because of big change in environment.

b. Enviroment Requirement

       Air humidity

When young seedlings are transplanted, humidity can be reduced gradually to 50%-75% according to the plant condition. If the humidity is low,  fine water fog from Air humidification machine or artificial spray is a quick and good choic to increase the humidity.. But never put the plants for longer time to avoid harm from higher temperature in closed environment.

Proper temperature   26℃-30℃, not lower than 10℃ in winter. Or, plants will go dormient.

Water: Dionaea like boggy, humid enviroments, so make sure their soil remains constantly moist. Use distilled water, rainwater or water collected from condensation.Even if your local water is relatively soft, it is not a good idea to use regulaer tap water as your main water source-it will lessen the acidity of substrate, and too many chemicals and minerals will harm the plants. Shade is necessary when temperature is high (esp. in summer) and light enrichment temperature is low.(esp. in winter).

Light: Dionaea need lots of sun to show up diefferent red colors on traps, which is used to attract prey, although they need moist soil. Light can be increased to 10000-20000 gradually at later stage. Be sure to put the plants in an area that will get at least 6-8 hours of summer sunlight if the plants are big enough and light supplements is necessary in winter.

Ventilation is helpful to reduce the temperature, but not so strong in case of drying the plants and leaf burning.

Fertilizer: No Fertilizer is necessary for Dionaea plants. Because too much salts might kill them, as they are accustomed to nutrient-poor soil. But all nutrients can be satisfied by trapping prey on Dionaea their own. But some grower suggest using fertilizer, we didn’t try it.

Attention:

1、After long-distance transportation, plants are tied like people, please put the plants in enviroment with proper humidity and low light.

2、How to tell whether the plants receive enough light.

Observe the trap color:

a. Orange red or purple red indicating enough light, but for some varieties, they only have yellow trap, like “1209”; “1205”is red variety, they don’t need much light as “1204”,”1206” and “1209”;

b. Green or deep green indicate that light is not enough, please increase the light.

C. Please be patient to wait for the color change, because it usualy take several weeks.

3、Do not touch the tray with hand, because aalts on hands might kill the plant.

4、Dionaea is sensative to nematode, please don’t place pot or tray plants on the ground directly.

5、Please keep plants above the water level in the tunnel 2-3cm, no touching the water.
